In light of recent events which have seen organisations around the world quite literally held to ransom, we wanted to offer our advice on how to take precautions to lessen the chance of your business being affected.

The computer virus named WannaCry has affected high profile institutions including FedEx and the NHS by allowing access to encrypted data only after a ransom has been paid.

There’s no time like the present to check your own business policy around cyber security to keep such malware at bay as much as is possible.

At a basic level, you must ensure that your software is up-to-date. Microsoft addressed a know weakness with a patch in March, but the many users who didn’t update their computers remained vulnerable for longer.

Government-support certification scheme, Cyber Essentials offers guidance to businesses of all sizes and across every sector. Having this knowledge can dramatically decrease the chances of falling victim to attack.

Meanwhile, the National Cyber Security Centre offers advice on what to do if you have been affected.
